Never in our wildest imagination could we have connected her father’s love with her maths anxiety… but that’s exactly what we uncovered during her RTT hypnotherapy session.
The Struggle Behind the Marks of my South African Maths student
When her mother first reached out to me, she was deeply concerned. Her daughter, just 15 years old, is a bright and capable student, but her maths results were slipping into the 40s and 50s. At that level, she wouldn’t qualify for higher-grade maths, which meant she couldn’t choose science or physics next year, effectively closing the door to the career she dreams of pursuing at tertiary level.
Her mother described how exam time had become unbearable. Her daughter would walk into the classroom, panic would set in, and her mind would go completely blank. This was not a matter of laziness. She kept up with homework and understood the content in class. Maths had become the one subject that triggered overwhelming anxiety, to the point of panic attacks.
Discovering the Root Cause of exam anxiety
In our RTT session, what we uncovered was profound: maths had become entangled with her relationship with her father. Her parents are separated, and while she once had a close bond with him, that relationship is now strained.
In hypnosis, beautiful childhood memories surfaced. Times when she and her dad would play little maths games. He would challenge her with questions, and she loved showing how easily she could answer them. Maths was their bond, their shared game, and a place where she once felt deeply connected to him. Now, as that relationship became strained, maths no longer felt safe. It had become loaded with the weight of his approval and love.
This is the incredible power of RTT: it allows us to go directly to the root cause of anxiety or blocks. Instead of trying to force more study time or surface-level coping strategies, we could see clearly what the real issue was.
Healing and Transformation
During hypnotherapy, we gently separated her maths results from her father’s influence and returned the responsibility for success back into her own hands. We healed the wound in her heart that had been tied to their relationship, freeing her to experience maths as just maths, no longer a symbol of love or disapproval.
The transformation was rapid. In her own words:
“Walking in I felt confident and relaxed. I didn’t feel stressed or anxious like I normally would. It was like something had clicked in place and I felt 100% again. I feel more confident in myself and my abilities once again. I feel like me again now that I got rid of my mental block and my stress. I know that if I can do it, many others can too.”
And then, the message every parent hopes to receive:
“Hey Nidia, I know it’s late but I just wanted to let you know I got 94% for my maths test 🤍.”
Her next result skyrocketed, but the true success was not just the number. She walked into that exam calm, clear-minded, and in control of her emotions. With her nervous system regulated and her mind sharp, she was able to access her memory with ease.
More Than Marks
Yes, the jump from the 40s and 50s to 94% is remarkable. But what matters even more is that she now knows something most adults never figure out: we are not slaves to our parents’ influence. We are free to create outcomes that serve our own future.
For her, this means confidence restored, doors reopened to her dream career, and the knowledge that her results are no longer about approval or disapproval. They are about her choices and her future.
A Parent’s Role
The earlier you can put your child in the driver’s seat of their own life, the better. Sometimes, that starts with booking the right therapist. RTT doesn’t just treat the surface symptoms. It gets straight to the root cause and creates rapid, lasting transformation.
📌 If your child is struggling with exam anxiety, panic attacks, or confidence in their abilities, know that there is a way through. The right help at the right time can change everything.
